If you work around any kind of hazardous materials or dangerous goods you want to make sure you are properly trained. Perhaps you work inside a building that has a threat of being exposed to harmful materials, you want to make sure you and your staff have appropriate hazmat training, or hazardous materials training. Or if you work inside a storage warehouse or a shipping facility where dangerous goods packaging is occurring, you want to make sure you are appropriately prepared to handle any and all potential incidents. Although these two types of items may have many similarities, they are not the same and proper training should be obtained from whichever one poses a potential risk.
What Are Hazardous Materials?
A hazardous material could be any item that can potentially cause harm to others. It could also cause significant hard to the environment instead. There is a wide range of materials that are considered hazardous. Hazardous materials include things like acid, mercury, lead paint chips, and radioactive material. Materials can be harmful on their own, or harmful if mixed with something else to cause some sort of reaction (a chemical reaction, for example).
What Are Dangerous Goods?
Dangerous goods are a slightly different classification. Dangerous goods are things or substances that can cause risk to others if they are transported – or more specifically, transported incorrectly. A few examples of dangerous goods include:explosives, corrosives, gases, and flammable liquids. It is critical to learn about safe dangerous goods packaging practices to ensure the safety of everyone around you.
With the appropriate type and level of training students will be able to identify potential safety risks and hazards, as well as learning to evaluate potential safety risks. It’s also important for employees to learn all of the current laws, regulations and standards applicable to handling all types of hazardous materials and dangerous goods packaging to ensure regulatory compliance.
